The Spread Eagle, which is London’s longest running privately owned French restaurant, was originally the tavern and chop-house of a thriving 17th century coaching inn and retains much of its original character. The Spread Eagle is favourably listed in all major “good food” guides. Its menu, which changes constantly, is primarily traditional French with a few concessions to recent new styles in continental cooking. All the food is fresh and cooked to order and the menu is complemented by a large and interesting wine list. Click on our web link (below address details) to view our web site for further information.
The Spread Eagle is known to have been a tavern at least since before the 1650's. A hundred years later it became a successful coaching inn and hostelry with daily services to London and the Kent coast. The cobbled road to the stabling can still be seen beneath the large arch. The inn was built on the line of the old Roman road - later, and for many centuries the main London Road - and Stockwell street became so named because of the communal well that stood outside the tavern supplying the needs of both farm animals and the people of Greenwich since the Middle Ages.
About the year 1900 the comedian Dan Leno lodged for some months in the first floor room of this tavern whilst working at the nearby Morton's Theatre. The Music Hall directly opposite the restaurant (now the Greenwich Theatre) has provided good custom for the Spread Eagle for over a century and since we re-opened over thirty years ago, many more famous celebrities have dined here.
